Wednesday—September the 30th, 1863–

Dear Annie–

‘Tis with pleasure that I take my pen in hand this morning to answer your kind letters of the 21 & 25 which both came today. They found me well as usual and I was glad to hear from you once more, for it has been quite a little spell since I had a letter from my Darling pet. I put a letter in the office today, but I will commence to write another and try and make amends for my past negligence in writing.

It has rained all day today, and is raining still. I haven’t been out to learn anything about Benny, but I understand that they went to the fort as I expected….

Whilst I am thinking about it, please tell me if my old Rival is in the Army, or is he a Copperhead or what? A what, I guess. He is a darned shit anyhow or he would never went crying around trying to get my good little black-eyed gall away from me….”

Well, Annie, there isn’t much war news at present. I believe though that they are reinforcing old Rosencrans pretty strong and we may soon hear of another heavy fight there. Well, I don’t think of anything more to write this time….”

Goodbye…My”
