“But the reason I am asking for money is because we don’t get enough to eat …” Donald Ross, England 1 Aug. 1917

Aug 1 1917

Dear Dad,

…I am going to cable you for $50 and don’t think that because I mentioned poker that I am gambling for such is not the case. The last poker I played was on board ship on the way over. But the reason I am asking for money is because we don’t get enough to eat and the money we get paid barely keeps one in smoking tobacco and writing paper and stamps as I am writing continually. As far as I can see from now I am going back to the line before long so I want the money to live fairly good while I am able.

Your Loving Son Donald.
