Brother—
Again I seat myself to write you a few lines to let you know how I am. I am very sick at this time. I cannot really sit up to write you. I am going to try for a discharge. I do not think I will be able for duty anymore this winter. I want you to come out as soon as you can and I will try to go back with you. I want you to assist me in getting off. You must bring me my clothes for fear I cannot get off. I will come soon. Give my love to all. Excuse this short letter.

Notes:
Although the letter is not signed with a last name, there is a notation on the reverse of the cover that states, John H. Mason, Richmond. Research revealed a soldier by the name of John H. Mason who resided at Richmond, Virginia. Mason mustered into Company “E”, North Carolina 52nd Infantry on March 8, 1862. In January 1864, he was promoted to Corporal. Corporal Mason's discharge never happened and he was killed in action two years later, on September 30, 1864 at Jones’ Farm, Virginia.
