Patricia Tuckett Canadian Nurse in the Mediterranean, 1915
"I am on night duty now in charge of the officers from all parts of the world here..." PATT, Alexandria Egypt 26 Sept 1915
My dear ---
Received your letter of August 28th and as usual was glad to get it. I read them all. ******* [blacked out by censor?] I am on night duty now in charge of the officers from all parts of the world here. We are busy and the heat is intense but it is much cooler working at night. The breeze off the sea at night is quite cool. We live at the New Kledhive Hotel now when we are on night duty. When war broke out this new hotel was taken on by the government for the night nurses of Alexandria. There are 200 there and the hotel is grand. The meals are nicer than at the hospital. We drive to and from the hosptial in a big wagon.
Today we visited the Catacombs and Pompey's Pillar, also the Sphinx. I had a weird feeling in the catacombs with all the mummies and bones of ancient Kings dating 2000 B.C. The old Roman wells and baths are there and very well preserved. We went to the Museum afterwards and saw more mummies and bones and I did not sleep very well today after it all -- there were so many lizards crawling about the tombs in the catacombs. Well I cannot keep awake so must close. Give my best love to all the girls, PATT

St. Marys Journal Newspaper, St Marys Ontario Note from Lorine: I was so intrigued by PATT's letters that I had to find her. A search of the online CEF database was difficult as I had nothing to go on but her signature "PATT" (all caps). I tried several searches using wildcards and found nothing. Then I decided that her first name was probably "P...." - Patricia? Phyllis? Pearl? There didn't seem to be too many P names for women so I started hunting - BINGO! Patricia Tuckett now has a full name and I intend to search for more information on her
